Why See Us For Treatment?
Did you know?
There’s an Increase in Bees During Fall.
During the fall season, you may have noticed an increase in bees. This is due to the bees getting ready for winter. The bees send out more foragers in fall to collect food for supplies in winter. Bees may seem to be a bit more pestering during your lovely late summer/ early fall picnic because the bees begin to seek out artificial food sources. Of course as they get a bit more bothersome, it is human nature to swat them away. The bees get more aggressive as they are swatted at but also because in fall as they are trying to protect the hive. This is where you see an increase in bee stings.
Different Levels of Symptoms
Mild
- Instant sharp pain at the site of the sting
- Red welt at the sting site
- Slight swelling around the sting area
In most cases, these symptoms disappear within a few hours.
Moderate
- Extreme redness or swelling at the site of the sting
- Swelling increases over the course of one to two days
The symptoms of a moderate reaction resolve within five to 10 days. A moderate reaction does not mean a severe allergic reaction will take course but the next time the same person is stung, they may have a similar reaction. It is recommended to talk to an Allergist about treatment and prevention if the same reaction becomes more severe each time.
Severe Allergic Reaction
A severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening and should seek immediate emergency treatment. A common myth is going to the emergency room for bee sting anaphylaxis. It is best to see an Allergist as they have the proper treatment.
A small percentage of people who are stung by a bee experience anaphylaxis. Some signs and symptoms are:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of tongue and throat
- Skin reaction
- Hives
- Itching
- Flushed or pale skin
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Loss of consciousness
- Dizziness
The chances of experiencing anaphylaxis increases by 25% to 65% for someone who experiences a severe allergic reaction. Talk to an Allergist about prevention measures like immunotherapy to avoid similar reactions in case of the next bee sting.
